Silom, Bangkok: is it the right place to stay

Stay in Silom if you want rooftop bars, serious restaurants and quick access to both the river and the centre. It is Bangkok’s main business district, so it suits work trips and short city breaks better than a slow holiday.

Silom Road runs through Bang Rak from the Sala Daeng intersection, by Lumpini Park, to Charoen Krung Road near the river. Its nickname is the “Wall Street of Thailand”. The name means windmill, probably after one a Western entrepreneur set up in the area.

Who it suits

You want Silom?
Rooftops and dinners on foot Yes, this is the area’s strength
A business trip Yes, with BTS and MRT at Sala Daeng
The river without a riverside rate Yes, BTS Saphan Taksin connects to Sathorn Pier

Getting around

The BTS Silom Line runs along the area. These are the stops you will use:

  • Sala Daeng (S2): connects to MRT Si Lom on the Blue Line, which reaches Chinatown and Sukhumvit.
  • Chong Nonsi (S3): for Mahanakhon, Exit 3.
  • Saphan Taksin (S6): connects to Sathorn Pier for river boats to the Grand Palace and Wat Pho.
  • Siam: two stops from Sala Daeng, for the malls and the Sukhumvit Line.

Hotels in Silom

Pick by which end of the road suits your plans.

Dusit Thani Bangkok, for the park and the station. It is at 98 Rama IV Road, looks over Lumpini Park and connects to the Sala Daeng and Si Lom stations. It has reopened after a renovation and is part of Dusit Central Park. Cannubi by Umberto Bombana, inside, holds one Michelin star in the 2026 guide, according to the hotel.

The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon, for a younger crowd. It has 155 rooms in the Mahanakhon tower on Narathiwas Road.

lebua at State Tower, for views from your room. At 1055 Silom Road, it lists suites with city or river views, and it holds Sky Bar and Distil.

Banyan Tree and The Sukhothai, for Sathorn next door. Both are on South Sathorn Road. The Sukhothai is set in gardens with lotus ponds. Banyan Tree’s Moon Bar and Vertigo are closed for renovation until 2 December 2026, so check before you book for the view.

Michelin also names COMO Metropolitan and SO/ Bangkok at the Lumpini end of the area, and Pullman G. Our luxury hotels guide compares the top picks.

What to do

Mahanakhon SkyWalk. The observation deck stands at 314 metres. Tickets run from 500 to 1,200 baht depending on the time, and it opens from 10 am to midnight, with last access at 11 pm. Go for sunset and book ahead for the slot you want.

Rooftops. The Tourism Authority of Thailand lists both the SkyWalk and Sky Bar among Bangkok’s night views. Our rooftop bars guide has floors and minimum spends.

Lumpini Park. It sits at the eastern end of the road. Go early, before the heat. See our Lumpini Park guide.

Sri Mahamariamman Temple. This Hindu temple is known for its Navaratri celebrations, and it gives a different view of the city from the Buddhist temples.

Where to eat

The area has some of the city’s most recognised restaurants. Michelin’s 2024 guide to the neighbourhood lists Chef’s Table and Mezzaluna at lebua with two stars each, Maison Dunand with one, and Plu as a Bib Gourmand. Check the current edition, because stars change every year. Our Michelin guide has the latest.

For something simpler, Michelin’s older 2020 list points to Somtum Der on Saladaeng Road for Isan food, about 120 metres from Silom Road, and to Somboon Seafood on Surawong Road for curried crab. Confirm hours before you go.

Nightlife

Michelin describes the side streets of Silom as a centre of the city’s nightlife and calls Soi 2 and Soi 4 the hub of its gay scene. Patpong is also here. It is not one of our recommendations. For a night out, start with our nightlife guide, and for markets see night markets in Bangkok.

The verdict

Silom is a strong choice for three or four nights if rooftops and restaurants are the point of your trip. For a first visit built around the temples, the river hotels are a better base, and for long stays Sukhumvit offers more variety.
