Capella Bangkok, Four Seasons and Mandarin Oriental are the three to start with. They hold No. 2, No. 3 and No. 10 on The World’s 50 Best Hotels 2026, and all three sit on the Chao Phraya.

Bangkok’s top hotels differ more than their star ratings suggest. Some are low and quiet by the water. Others are towers with a BTS station at the door. Decide what you want first: the river, the pool, the food or the location.

This guide covers 12 hotels. It is based on official hotel sites, the MICHELIN Guide and The 50 Best, and it is not a first-hand test. Aman Nai Lert is also on the 2026 list at No. 48, but it is not one of the 12 we compare here.

The river hotels

Capella is the most private. It is a low building, with river views from all 101 suites and villas, and 7 villas on the river’s edge. Each room has a balcony or a verandah with a jacuzzi plunge pool. Côte by Mauro Colagreco holds two MICHELIN Stars. Pick it if you want quiet over scale.

Four Seasons is the strongest all-round choice for design and leisure. It has two temperature-controlled infinity pools by the river, a 35-metre lap pool and a 2,500 sqm spa and wellness centre. BKK Social Club, inside the hotel, is No. 20 on Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2026.

Mandarin Oriental is the one with the history, on the river since 1876. It has butler service in all rooms and suites, two outdoor pools, and The Oriental Spa across the river by boat. Anne-Sophie Pic at Le Normandie holds two MICHELIN Stars. Pick it if the hotel itself is the reason for the trip.

The Peninsula sits on the Khlong San bank. All rooms and suites look onto the river, the pool has three tiers and Thai salas, and the hotel runs a helipad and a restored rice barge. Peninsula Time gives flexible check-in and check-out on direct bookings, which matters after a long flight.

The central hotels

Rosewood suits a short trip. It links directly to BTS Ploenchit and holds Lennon’s, the vinyl bar at No. 7 on Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2026. It is No. 70 on The World’s 50 Best Hotels 2026.

Park Hyatt sits above Central Embassy with direct access to the mall and the BTS. It has a 40-metre saltwater pool and Penthouse Bar + Grill on the top three floors.

Siam Kempinski is the family choice, with several saltwater pools in a large garden, a kids club and a covered walkway to Siam Paragon. Most rooms have a balcony.

The St. Regis offers butler service and a skybridge to BTS Ratchadamri. The hotel lists IGNIV with one MICHELIN Star, Andreas Caminada’s first restaurant outside Switzerland.

Waldorf Astoria has rooms by André Fu, a heated infinity pool on the 16th floor and dining on floors 55 to 57.

Sathorn and Silom

The Sukhothai is the calm one, in gardens with lotus ponds and with a 25-metre saltwater pool and a hammam at the spa. It does not publish a room count on its main site.

Banyan Tree is known for height, with a pool on the 21st floor. Its rooftop Moon Bar and Vertigo restaurant are closed for renovation until 2 December 2026, so check before you book for the view.

The Standard is the least traditional of the group, inside the Mahanakhon tower, with a terrace pool and restaurants such as Mott 32 and Ojo. Its website lists no spa.

How to choose

  • First trip and one hotel only: Capella or Mandarin Oriental.
  • Best pools: Four Seasons, or Siam Kempinski for gardens.
  • Best food on site: Mandarin Oriental or Capella, for their two-star restaurants.
  • Best bar on site: Rosewood for Lennon’s, Four Seasons for BKK Social Club.
  • Least time in traffic: Rosewood, Park Hyatt or The St. Regis, all linked to the BTS.
  • Quiet and gardens in the city: The Sukhothai.

Booking advice

Rates change by season and room type, so we do not quote them here. Compare the hotel’s own site with your booking channel, since some benefits apply only to direct bookings. Ask whether a river view is guaranteed for your room category. At hotels with a renovation, ask which venues will be open on your dates. Where hotels publish them, check-in is usually from 3 pm and check-out by 12 pm. Banyan Tree starts check-in at 2 pm.
