Stay on the Chao Phraya if you want the great hotels of Bangkok and a resort feel. Stay around Ploenchit or Siam if you want the BTS at the door and the big malls on foot.
Bangkok is large and its traffic is slow, so your area decides how your days feel. Pick it by what you will do most, then pick the hotel.
| Area | Suits | Main transit | Hotel picks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Riverside | First visits, couples, hotel lovers | Hotel boats, BTS Saphan Taksin | Capella, Four Seasons, Mandarin Oriental, Peninsula |
| Sathorn and Silom | Rooftops, dining, business trips | BTS Sala Daeng, MRT Lumphini | Banyan Tree, Sukhothai, The Standard |
| Lumphini | Quiet base near the centre | BTS Ratchadamri | St. Regis, Waldorf Astoria |
| Siam and Ratchaprasong | Shopping, families, transit | BTS Siam, BTS Ploenchit | Siam Kempinski, Rosewood, Park Hyatt |
| Sukhumvit | Long stays, bars, restaurants | BTS Nana, Asok, Phrom Phong | Ploenchit hotels, same BTS line |
| Thonglor | Cocktail bars, clubs, local dining | BTS Thong Lo | Ploenchit hotels, same BTS line |
Riverside
This is the choice for most luxury travellers. All four riverside picks sit directly on the water, and three of Bangkok’s four entries in the top 50 of The World’s 50 Best Hotels 2026 are here: Capella at No. 2, Four Seasons at No. 3 and Mandarin Oriental at No. 10.
Pick The Peninsula if you want every room facing the river. It sits on the opposite bank in Khlong San.
Transit is the trade-off. Four Seasons says BTS Saphan Taksin is a 15-minute walk from the hotel, and it runs a shuttle boat to the station and to ICONSIAM. Mandarin Oriental runs a free boat to ICONSIAM, and Capella runs one to ICONSIAM and Sathorn Pier. Check the current schedule when you book. Sathorn Pier and Saphan Taksin are close together, which makes this the easiest link between the river and the BTS. The Grand Palace and Wat Arun are simplest to reach from this side of the city by boat. See the Grand Palace guide and the Wat Arun guide.
Not ideal if you plan to spend most evenings in Thonglor. That trip is long at night.
Sathorn and Silom
This is the business district and the rooftop district. It suits people who want good restaurants close by and a short ride to both the river and the centre.
Banyan Tree is close to MRT Lumphini and BTS Sala Daeng. Its rooftop Moon Bar and Vertigo restaurant are closed for renovation until 2 December 2026, so check that before you book for the view. The Sukhothai is the quiet option here, set in gardens with lotus ponds on South Sathorn Road. The Standard suits a younger crowd, inside the Mahanakhon tower on Narathiwas Road.
Pick this area if you want rooftop bars within reach. Sky Bar and Distil at lebua are on Silom Road.
Lumphini
The area around Lumphini Park and Ratchadamri Road is central but calmer than Siam. Business travellers and couples who want space from the crowds do well here.
The St. Regis has a skybridge to BTS Ratchadamri and looks over the Royal Bangkok Sports Club. Waldorf Astoria, also on Ratchadamri Road, has an infinity pool on the 16th floor and restaurants and bars on floors 55 to 57.
Siam and Ratchaprasong
Stay here for shopping, for families and for the best transit. Siam Kempinski connects to Siam Paragon by a covered walkway, and its garden pools make it the strongest family pick in this group. It also has a kids club.
Two Ploenchit hotels sit at the eastern edge of the area. Rosewood links directly to exit 1 of BTS Ploenchit and holds Lennon’s, No. 7 on Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2026. Park Hyatt sits above Central Embassy with direct access to the mall and the station.
If you are unsure, this is the safest choice. You are on the BTS and can walk to several malls. See best malls in Bangkok.
Sukhumvit
Sukhumvit is a long road with very different stretches. It suits repeat visitors and longer stays, with bars and restaurants around the BTS stations at Nana, Asok and Phrom Phong.
Our 12-hotel shortlist has no hotel on this stretch. If you want luxury and Sukhumvit access together, stay at Rosewood or Park Hyatt. BTS Ploenchit is on the same Sukhumvit Line, a few stops from Asok. Bars close by include Above Eleven on Soi 11 and Spectrum on Soi 13.
Thonglor
Thonglor is where many of the city’s best bars and restaurants are. Dry Wave Cocktail Studio, the top-ranked bar in Thailand on Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2026, is in this district. So are Octave on Soi 57 and the Beam club. It suits people who plan to go out most nights.
It is less useful for sightseeing, since the old city and the river are far away. Our shortlist has no Thonglor hotel, so the same rule applies: base yourself at Ploenchit and take the BTS to Thong Lo station.
How to decide
- Three nights, first visit: Riverside. The hotels are part of the trip.
- Shopping and family: Siam Kempinski.
- Short work trip: Rosewood or Park Hyatt, for the direct station link.
- Rooftops and dinners: Sathorn or Silom.
- Going out every night: Ploenchit, with a short ride to Thonglor.
From Suvarnabhumi Airport, Four Seasons quotes about 40 minutes by car and Siam Kempinski quotes 40 to 60 minutes, depending on traffic. Add time in the evening rush. Our luxury hotels guide compares the 12 hotels in more detail. Check rates and renovation notices before you book.
Questions people ask
What is the best area to stay in Bangkok for a first visit?
The riverside, if you want the classic hotels and easy boat access to the Grand Palace and Wat Arun. Choose Ploenchit or Siam if shopping and the BTS matter more.
Is it better to stay on the river or on Sukhumvit?
The river suits a slower trip built around the hotel and the old city. Sukhumvit suits a trip built around restaurants, bars and fast transit. Riverside hotels can feel far from the BTS, so check how the hotel's boat or shuttle works.
Which Bangkok area is best for nightlife?
Thonglor for cocktail bars and clubs, Silom for rooftops, and Sukhumvit Soi 11 for a louder club and rooftop night.
