The Jim Thompson House Museum is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm, and an adult ticket costs 250 baht. Take the BTS to National Stadium, use Exit 1, and expect to see the main house with a guide. You cannot enter it alone.

It is the former home and Asian art collection of James H.W. Thompson, known as the “Thai Silk King”. It is a compact, central visit that fits between a morning at the temples and an afternoon at the malls.

Older websites quote 200 baht and other hours. These are the figures on the museum’s own site, so go by them, and check before you go.

Tickets

You do not need a reservation. Walk-in tours run during the day even when online slots are full.

If you want to book, the museum says online sales opened on 8 September 2026 and names Viator and GetYourGuide as its authorised platforms. Other sites sell packages with hotel transfers at higher prices. These are optional.

The museum also warns about strangers outside who say it is closed and offer to take you elsewhere. It has no connection with them. Walk on.

The tour

Guides work in Thai, English, French, Chinese and Japanese. The museum does not publish a tour length. Trazy reports about 40 minutes, with English tours about every 30 minutes, though its closing time is out of date, so treat that as a rough guide.

Know these rules before you arrive:

  • Take your shoes off before you enter the main house. Wear something easy to remove.
  • Bags over 20 cm go in the lockers.
  • Inside the main house, no flash, selfies, individual photos or video.
  • The house has several stairways and no elevators, which matters if anyone in your group has limited mobility.

The museum publishes no dress code.

What you are looking at

Thompson was an American, born in 1906, who co-founded the Thai Silk Company in 1948 and helped revive the country’s silk industry in the 1950s and 1960s. In 1958 he began building this home on the Saen Saep canal, across from Bang Krua, where his weavers were based at the time.

The house is made up of six traditional Thai wooden houses, reassembled here. Most were dismantled and moved from Ayutthaya. The largest, a weaver’s house, came from Bang Krua and is now the living room. Inside is the Asian art he collected.

Then there is the mystery. On 26 March 1967 he went for a walk in the Cameron Highlands in Malaysia and disappeared. He was never found. The house came under the James H.W. Thompson Foundation.

How to get there

BTS, the best way. Ride to National Stadium, one stop from Siam, and use Exit 1. The Soi Kasemsan 2 lane leads to the museum. See getting around Bangkok for tickets and hours.

Canal boat. The Saen Saep boat stops at Saphan Hua Chang, near National Stadium station. Fares run from 8 to 22 baht and are paid in cash on board. It is a working commuter service, not a tourist boat, so the BTS is easier for most visitors. Check the walk from the pier on a map.

Taxi. The museum lists car, taxi and tuk-tuk as options. Give the driver the full address in case the soi is unfamiliar, and allow for traffic on Rama 1 Road.

Restaurant and art center

Jim Thompson, A Thai Restaurant lists the same soi address. It is open daily for lunch from 11:30 am to 4 pm and for dinner from 6 pm to 10 pm, and it is the easy lunch stop after a late morning tour.

The Jim Thompson Art Center is in the same compound, with its own exhibitions and programmes. Check what is on when you come.

Is it worth it

Yes, for most visitors with an interest in design, art or history. The setting is the appeal: traditional wooden Thai houses in the middle of the city, plus a real unsolved mystery.

Skip it only if you are short on time and have not yet done the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun. Those come first, and our guide to things to do in Bangkok sets out the wider order.

When to go and what to do nearby

Go at 10 am, when it opens, and pair it with lunch. The house is a stop from Siam, so you can continue to the best malls in Bangkok. The Bangkok Art and Culture Centre and MBK Center are also near this stretch. Our 3-day itinerary builds it into day 2.
