All of them sail the Chao Phraya after dark. What you are choosing is the boat, the kitchen and how many people you share the evening with.

The small boats: Thai food and a quieter evening

Apsara Cruise is the pick if you want the classic look. It is a restored rice barge with teak wood and murals, serving a five-course Thai menu by candlelight. You check in at River City Pier 1 from 6 pm. Banyan Tree’s festival rate is 4,200 baht net per person, or 6,500 baht with an open bar. Ask for the regular price outside festival dates.

Manohra offers the most flexibility. The Manohra Star is a teak barge over 100 years old and carries a maximum of 60 guests, so the evening stays small. There are three sailings: 6 to 8 pm, 7 to 9 pm and 8:30 to 10:30 pm. The set menus start at about 3,500 baht net with soft drinks, and about 4,500 baht with free-flow wine and beer. A couple’s package with champagne costs 11,500 baht. The operator’s two pages differ by 100 baht, so confirm the price. Choose the 6 pm sailing for the last of the daylight. The operator’s listing is tied to Anantara Riverside, but it does not name the boarding pier, so ask.

Saffron Cruise suits people who care more about the food than old-world charm. It is a contemporary boat with an open-air Moon Deck and an indoor saloon, serving a four-course Thai menu. Check-in is at ICONSIAM Pier 1 from 6:30 pm, with departure from Pier 2 at 7 pm.

The buffet boats

Shangri-La Horizon is the safest choice if you like to choose from a spread, or if your group has mixed tastes. The buffet includes seafood on ice, sushi and sashimi, carved dishes, and Thai and Western mains. The 2,900 baht nett price includes a first drink plus free-flow soft drinks and juice. Children pay 1,450 baht. It leaves from NEXT2 Pier on Soi Wat Suan Plu.

Chaophraya Cruise runs two boats from Asiatique, carrying 290 and 500 passengers, each with an air-conditioned lower deck and an open upper deck. Check-in is from 5:30 to 6:45 pm at Warehouse 3. Expect a buffet, live singers and a Thai greeting dance. This is an easy family option, not a romantic one.

Chao Phraya Princess is the budget option. Its site advertises a promotion from 1,900 baht down to 1,200 baht, with an international buffet and live music. Alcohol costs extra. The site does not publish departure times or the pier, so call +66 2 860 3700 before you plan around it.

How to choose

• Anniversary or proposal: Apsara or Manohra. At Manohra, book the premium menu with the champagne package.
• A Thai set menu rather than a buffet: Apsara, Manohra or Saffron.
• Mixed group or fussy eaters: Shangri-La Horizon.
• Large group on a budget: Chaophraya Cruise or Chao Phraya Princess.

Be cautious with reseller listings. Prices and times differ widely between sites, and many listings are out of date. Some guides still promote Supanniga Cruise and Loy Nava. We could not confirm from an operator’s site that either is sailing, so contact them directly before you plan around them.

What to expect on the night

Check-in opens between 30 minutes and about 1.5 hours before departure, depending on the boat, so leave extra time for Bangkok traffic.
