For traditional Thai massage with real history, go to the school at Wat Pho. For a clean, consistent treatment at a fair price, book Let’s Relax or Health Land, and for a longer ritual, choose Divana or a hotel spa.

This list is based on published information from each provider, and it reflects no first-hand visits. Check prices before you book.

Thai massage has serious standing. UNESCO added Nuad Thai to its list of intangible cultural heritage in 2019, describing it as part of Thai healthcare, using hands, elbows, knees and feet, sometimes with hot herbal compresses.

Wat Pho Thai Traditional Medical and Massage School

Wat Pho is the place most people mean when they talk about the home of Thai massage. The school inside the temple was founded in 1955, and it was the first Thai medical school approved by the Thai Ministry of Education. It teaches Thai massage alongside Thai pharmacy, medical practice and midwifery.

The school’s own site lists courses, services and branches, and it takes questions via LINE (@watpo-chetawan) and WhatsApp. Its main pages do not list current prices, so check on site.

Pick Wat Pho if you want a traditional massage in a historic setting, ideally after seeing the temple itself. Do not expect a spa, since it is more functional than pampering. If you want to go deeper, the school also runs courses.

Let’s Relax

A Thai day spa chain with branches in Bangkok and elsewhere in Thailand, reporting more than 28 years of experience. It is one of the easiest choices for a first-timer, since the menu and prices are published online. Samples from its site:

Treatment Length Price (baht)
Foot massage 60 min 875
Back and shoulder massage 60 min 800
Thai massage 120 min 1,300
Aroma oil massage 60 min 1,400
Four-hands Thai massage 60 min 1,400

Some treatments are available only at certain branches. Pick this if you value predictable quality and easy booking.

Health Land

A local chain that travel guides describe as known for long Thai massages at a fair price, with branches including Asoke. Its website does not show current prices, so confirm by phone or at the counter. Pick it if you want a longer treatment and care more about value than decor. Reservations help, particularly in the evening.

Divana

A Thai wellness brand founded in Bangkok in 2001, with four Bangkok spas: Scentuara near Lumphini, Virtue on Silom, Nurture on Sukhumvit 11, and Divine on Thonglor. Treatments centre on aromatherapy and Thai body rituals. Divana offers 10 percent off when you book and pay online. Pick it for a couple’s afternoon or a long treatment. See our spa guide for comparison.

Hotel spas

If you want the setting as much as the massage, a hotel spa is worth it. Rosewood’s Ancient Thai Massage, for example, is a no-oil treatment with acupressure and stretching. Its signature Sense of Ploen massage costs 5,400 baht for 90 minutes. Prices at this level pay for privacy, facilities and service as well as technique. Our spa guide compares the best of them.

Which treatment to choose

  • Thai massage: No oil, with firm pressure and stretching, wearing loose clothes usually provided. Good for stiffness.
  • Oil or aromatherapy massage: Long strokes with warm oil. Better for relaxing or jet lag.
  • Foot massage: A low-commitment choice after a day of walking and temples.
  • Herbal compress: Steamed herbs pressed on tight areas. A Thai classic worth adding if offered.

How to choose a good place

Stay with named providers until you know the area. A good massage shop has a clear menu with prices, a professional front desk and a real booking channel. Tell your therapist about injuries, pregnancy or anything else you want avoided, and say “soft” or “strong” to control the pressure. Medical conditions call for a word with your doctor first, since Thai massage involves real pressure and stretching.

Tipping is common, so bring small notes. Go after a long flight rather than before one, and drink water afterward.

Questions people ask

Where should I get a traditional Thai massage in Bangkok?

At Wat Pho if you want the historic setting, since the temple houses a school founded in 1955. Choose Let's Relax for a more comfortable, private room.

How much does a Thai massage cost in Bangkok?

It varies. At Let's Relax, a two-hour Thai massage is listed at 1,300 baht. Luxury hotel spas cost much more, with the Rosewood's 90-minute signature massage at 5,400 baht.

What is the difference between Thai and oil massage?

Thai massage is done without oil, using pressure and stretching along energy lines. Oil massage uses long strokes with warm oil and suits you if you want to relax rather than be stretched.

How do I find a legitimate massage shop?

Pick a shop with a clear printed menu and prices, and a website or booking line. Named chains, schools and hotel spas are the safest choices.
